Sneak Into The U.S? There’s An App For That!

-- A California professor has created a cell phone application to help guide immigrants across the border.
The Transborder Immigration Tool is meant to reduce the number of border crossing deaths.
The application can be downloaded onto low priced Motorola phones. It uses GPS technology to guide users through the desert and pinpoints locations where food, water and shelter is available.
Security consultant Karl DelaGuerra said the so-called safety tool is dangerous.
"We know that the same routes taken by illegal immigrants are the same routes of interest of terrorist organizations, we know they're the same routes of interest of drug organizations,” he said. “Why make it easier for the bad guys to get access into our country?” he said.
DelaGuerra has trained security forces around the world and said criminals would be interested in the application.
"The bad guys are dialed in to all the intelligence networks and resources that we have access to. We need to be concerned about what information we're providing them,” he said.
Ricardo Dominquez, the University of California San Diego professor who developed the tool, hopes to make the application available for free on the Internet.
Citizens in Central Phoenix had mixed feelings about giving illegal immigrants a hand crossing the border.
“If it decreases the risk they take by trying to cross I don't think that in itself is a bad thing,” said resident Melissa Healy.
"They ought to place whoever is helping them do that in jail,” said Dana Jule. "I mean, I don't know what part of illegal people don't understand. If you're helping you know them do that, then you're breaking the law too.”

Scottsdale, Arizona (June 11, 2008) - Today local area business entrepreneur Karl DelaGuerra made a philanthropic contribution of a recently found 150 year old Himalayan Thonka to the Emaho Foundation. Accepting on behalf of the Foundation was its founder Tibetan Monk Za Rinpoche. This Thonka, a sacred relic of the Budist religion, was previously presented in 1932 to DelaGuerra's father, a U. S. Navy officer, while stationed in Tsingtao, China. Until just a few weeks ago, it was preserved in a family storage unit in California where it had been locked away since 1954. Upon having this painting appraised and realizing what it might be, DelaGuerra then sought the opinion of the Asian Arts curator from the Phoenix Art Museum where this piece was confirmed to be an original Himalayan Thonka. According to Rinpoche this religious relic, dating back to around 1850, was probably taken by the Chinese government from a Tibetan monastery during a time of unrest in that region. DelaGuerra stated, "I was uncomfortable selling such an artifact and felt strongly that this painting should be returned to its religion of origin. It is time that a wrong in history be made right." Pictured here are DelaGuerra and Rinpoche with the Thonka, which is a depiction of the deity Kalarupa "The Protector". Rinpoche stated, "We are honored to receive this Thonka which are only allowed to be painted by certain religious figures within the Budist faith." Za Rinpoche has studied under the Dalai Lama and was recognized, while living in a refugee camp in southern India, as the sixth reincarnation of the Za Choeje Rinpoche. He holds the equivalent of a PhD in Budist studies and is a prominent author.
